Blue Bird Houses…Not What You Think!

Not the bird bluebird..but the color blue bird houses!  Birdhouses today come in every shape and color imaginable.  Blue is my favorite color and so I’ve picked out a few great blue bird houses that I like.  The first is a stained glass and copper blue birdhouse Blue Bird Houses

Then there’s the hand-thrown pottery (and weatherproof stoneware) blue bottle birdhouse

Add a Bluebird House to Your Yard!

Female Wastern Bluebird with NestlingsBluebirds are admired for their beauty, feeding in open areas around houses, and their endearing habit of nesting in man-made boxes.  They are one of America’s favorite wild birds.  A bluebird house actually comes in two different sizes to accomodate Eastern bluebirds and Western and Mountain Bluebird species.  Larger floor space and entrance holes are used for the latter.

Their primary diet consists of insects and fruit.  Native plants like Bittersweet will help attract them to your yard.  Mealworms are a favorite and an excellent source of protien, especially for mom’s feeding hungry nestlings.

Bluebird populations declined by almost 90% from 1920 – 1970.  This was due to loss of habitat and the introduction of non-native species (starlings and house sparrows).  You can help the now thriving bluebird population by placing a bluebird house in your yard today!

Bluebird Houses to Chase the Blues!

    Bluebird Houses

Since the hummingbirds are not yet in full force, the bluebirds are really grabbing my attention.  When I get up in the morning and look out the window, Mr. Bluebird is in the same spot waiting for me to fill the dish.  It’s been going on about 3 weeks, and I’m sure there is a nest in at least one of my three bluebird houses.  This makes me happy!  I love to watch them eat from the little dish attached to the bird feeder pole…it works perfectly.  I change their food around, offering meal worms, bluebird nuggets, and Avian Cuisine’s Nutri Crumbles Bluebird Delight.  They love it!

The bluebird house pictured above is actually made of vinyl-just like real houses.  Consider it an investment in real estate, as it will last a lifetime and house many future bluebird families.
