heated bird bathThe Number One Winter Bird Tip!

Attracting wild birds through changing seasons sometimes requires us to adapt birding accessories to those seasons. For instance, in the heat of summer, high fat suet melts easily and turns rancid quickly, so it’s not ideal for summer, although packed with calories and great for winter feeding! During freezing winter temperatures, the shallow water in bird baths will freeze over, rendering them useless.

Regardless of climate, a  fresh water source is always the most effective way to attract more species of wild birds. Aside from birdhouses and bird feeders, water will always complete a bird-friendly habitat. In colder climates during winter months, a heated bird bath is without a doubt, the number way to experience more sightings of different species for the ultimate backyard birding experience!

bird bathsSure, bird feeders attract wild birds, as do birdhouses. But unless you’ve added a fresh water source like a bird bath to your little habitat…you don’t know what you’re missing!

Fresh water attracts more song birds, as some may not ever frequent a feeder. Add a bath accessory to create moving water, like a dripper or water wiggler, and you’ve just created an absolute bird magnet!

Bird Baths are available in every possible shape, size, and color imaginable. The fiberglass or resin models, resist molding and scale build-up unlike their concrete cousins. The light-weight factor makes them a breeze to clean as well.  Many of these bird baths come with hollow pedestals to allow for filling with rocks or sand.  This helps to stabilize the bath, and make it more sturdy.

Fresh water in freezing winter months is critical to wild birds.  They do not eat snow, and require fresh water for preening feathers. Dirty feathers just don’t fly right!

Mosaic Bird Baths for Vibrant Colors

    Mosaic Bird Baths

Adding color to your environment brings it to life!

Whether planting annuals, or adding garden accents, a small burst of color will have a large impact.  Functional art for your yard makes good sense, and birdbaths fit the bill.  You can attract more feathered friends with a fresh water source, and frankly, the birds aren’t too choosey when it comes to bath designs.  The only requirements are that the bath be clean, and water levels shallow enough for birds to bathe and wade comfortably.  Optimal water depth is 2-3 inches-maximum.

Mosaic Bird Baths are available in whimsical designs with fun, vibrant colors.  One of the advantages of mosaics is they are able to accommodate a bath heater in winter, giving birds a year-round water source to count on in frigid weather.  This is a critical time for wild birds as most natural water sources tend to freeze, leaving them unable to bathe and properly preen feathers.
