Use Bird Baths to Attract the Most Birds
We create wonderful habitats by feeding and housing wild birds. Backyard birders seem to have a passion for their feathered friends. Through habitat, we can entice birds into our yards for our viewing pleasure, and their general health and well-being.
Water is a super way to attract birds who may not visit feeders. Fresh water is critical for wild birds’ survival, not only to drink, but to bathe and preen feathers. This is what keeps them working properly.
There are a myriad of bird baths available, from basic to decorative, inexpensive-to higher-end. Materials vary, and again, a multitude of them are available. The best possible choice for a bird bath is one that you will maintain. By providing fresh water at all times, you can be sure to see a greater variety of wild birds visit your backyard. Water need only be 2″ to 3″ deep, as this is the optimal depth for comfortable wading and bathing. If your birdbath is deeper, try adding a large rock in the center for birds to land and perch.

Make Your Own Mosaic Bird Bath
According to Wikipedia, the term mosaic is defined as: “the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other material. It may be a technique of decorative art, an aspect of interior decoration or of cultural and spiritual significance as in a cathedral. Small pieces, normally roughly cubic, of stone or glass of different colors, known as tesserae, (diminutive tessellae), are used to create a pattern or picture.”
Several articles can be found on the internet with detailed instructions on making your own mosaic bird bath. This can be a time consuming project involving three to four good chunks of time, but well worth it. A mosaic bird bath can be a beautiful and functional piece of art for your landscape, that wild birds will love too!

Walk-In Birdbaths Suit Wild Birds
With spring fever upon us, many folks who enjoy wild birds might be thinking of new bird bath for the season. There are so many beautiful styles from which to choose, it can get confusing. Consider first if a hanging, pedestal, or deck-mount model is what you’re after as far as yard decor. Then don’t forget about cleaning and maintaining the birdbath, choose something that is easy to clean, fresh water is a must for wild birds in summer time.
The most important factor is depth. Many birdbaths are really too deep for wild birds to drink and bathe comfortably. No more than two inches of water is necessary. If your existing birdbath is too deep, consider placing a large rock in the center for birds to perch. Also, the Birdbath Raft will turn any container of water into a functional bird bath.
The newer birdbaths feature an uneven, or graduated bottom, the same concept as an inground swimming pool, where you walk in. This is a great idea and very accommodating for songbirds too.
